Miscellaneous: I’ve attended several film festivals this year and I know we’re gonna wow them.  Distribution for an independent is enormously difficult but I believe the buzz garnered by our work will open doors we formally could’ve only dreamed of.  I believe in this project and have bet the farm to make it happen.  You amazed my staff and me at audition. We feel, based on what we saw from you all, that our bet is safe.  Ours, my, job is to make good on the trust you’ve granted me.  Whether you believe in God or not, I gotta tell you, there’s something blessed about this whole project and I can’t wait to see it come to fruition.  Some of you will get call notices before the end of the year; some, not until next Spring.  But whatever and wherever you are, have a blessed Christmas and a very safe and forward-looking New Years.

The rest of the newsletter is for staff and crew but feel free to read if you wish. To read about meetings etc., scroll below crew news.

 Crew News

Camera: Stephen and Mike, every shoot, including montages, will be shot with two cameras. Additionally, because I believe that the first shot is the charm, I will combine a third camera for a partial mastershot when the “A” Camera and “B” Camera are not in either close-up or extreme close-up on the subject.  After the CU, a separate mastershot will be negotiated with the “A” and “B” cams at discreet distances but with telephoto on the subjects to give us additional variety in the editing suite.  While the actors don’t over rehearse, we, the crew will rehearse and choreograph our moves, trucks, and follow focus with Steve (not Stephen) creating the “marks” for our actors.  We’ll go over this in more detail in our production meeting(s).

Sound: Steven is our sound engineer.  All shots that include actors with one-to-three actors in scene will use wireless lavaliere mics hidden in their clothing and/or hair. Ensemble shots with more than three will have the principals using lavaliere while a sixteen foot boom microphone will follow the speakers in the ensemble as they speak. Actors marks will be particularly important since the gaffer will have to know and anticipate the movement of the actor through the scene.  Remember, no audience will forgive bad sound.

Lighting:  I absolutely love natural light.  I want each scene to appear as natural as possible and not as if it was artificially lit to look a certain way.  I tend to use all available natural light combined with optical filters, gels, and scrims on-camera and then employ software based after-effect filters in post to achieve the sweetened final look I desire.  Additionally, excessive lighting creates shadows and hotspots that bother most audiences.  Lighting will be present but I call it corrective lighting. It will be less intrusive and more comfortable for the cast.

Cast & Crew Meeting Set for February

Meetings

Full Cast & Crew Meeting: will be held at the Maryland Hall for the Arts in Annapolis in February  2005 at 6:30 pm(exact date to be determined later).  Refreshments will be served.  The agenda? For the entire cast and crew to meet, assimilate, ask questions of each other and the crew.  This meeting is semi-mandatory meaning I need you to be there.  Of course emergencies happen but it is important that we all start this project on the same page and you best efforts to attend will be most appreciated.

Wrap Party:  A wrap party is scheduled approximately six weeks after we wrap. The highlights of that party will be great food, super camaraderie, and the first showing of the theatrical trailer. A gag reel and selected ‘dailies’ will also be shown. Our keynote speaker will be a surprise celebrity. Your spouses and/or significant others are welcome to attend the wrap party.
