The Mustard Seed by Michael Alvin Way is the second book in The Family Life series behind the 2004 publication of Cynthia’s Dream. Early feedback indicates The Mustard Seed promises to be a sensation within the Christian fiction market. The Mustard Seed is the story of the Albert and Sanchez families told from the point-of-view of thirty-something Oliver Albert, a man of great success and modest wealth as he traces his family’s unique dynasty of the faithful by telling a story in his own voice that begins when he is thirteen years old. The central character, Oliver, at age thirteen begins to notice strange nuances in his unique ability to control the sphere of physical influence as he becomes closer to God. This change comes just days after hearing a sermon on the Biblical parable of the mustard seed. Naive and full of youthful hubris, Oliver discovers that through his unusual child-like faith he can perform seemingly inexplicable miracles. Things are going well for young Oliver until the awesome power of early puberty causes Oliver to try using the sacred and forbidden power from God in an awkward attempt to woo Jessica, a pretty classmate and the object of Oliver's fancy, into a teenage sexual scenario he knows is wrong. Oliver’s hormones drag him on a declining journey away from God and into a life where he eventually realizes that that something special is missing. He is miserable. As Oliver grows into manhood, he meets seemingly disconnected people who are in fact, part of God’s ultimate plan for his life. Oliver learns, and in turn teaches us, what a walk with God is in reality. His life lessons debunk long held mores that cause mankind to flounder on the avenue call “faith”. Breathtaking in scope, The Mustard Seed spans nearly seventy years within the lives of two families linked by faith, bonded by love, scraped and bruised by tragedy, yet loved and guided by the Father in heaven in a round-about time-travel tale that will blow your mind. With just a touch of fantasy combined with plausible Christian based science fiction, you will see the unique relevance of understanding God’s timetable versus mankind’s temporal clockwatching. The Mustard Seed cleverly uses fiction of weave a tale of mystery, intimacy, romance, anger at God, and intense drama that will make you wonder “what if?”. This volume will take you by the hand and lead into places most are afraid to observe within themselves. In time you will see God’s reflection peering back through your own eyes; you will understand that you, not God, was what kept you from attaining your dreams all along. The Mustard Seed follows Cynthia’s Dream in the family life series, but the two stories are completely different. Both simultaneously take you to that place of peace and serenity with the Father that all of us want and secretly long for.
